The Curb

Amanda and Chris Chaney bought their 1924 home in 2004, despite warnings from friends and family that the house would need a lot of work. "We saw the potential and loved it back to life."

Steal the Idea: Paint Colors

House: Pure White by Sherwin-Williams
Trim, Shutters, Door: Privilege Green by Sherwin-Williams

Steal the Idea: Porch Chairs

Hardwood Adirondack chairs can stand up to all types of weather and look extra cute sporting striped pillows.
(Original folding adirondack chair, $189, llbean.com; Classic stripe outdoor pillow, $29, potterybarn.com)

Steal the Idea: Shutters

Even if your shutters are just for looks, try to scale them to the size of your window. Find ones that would cover the whole window if they were to close.
(Mastic Home Exteriors louvered shutter in clay, plygem.com for buying information.)

Steal the Idea: Wall Ornament

Who says art has to hang inside? This white stucco house has the perfect backdrop for a piece of ironwork: a windowless exterior wall. Look for weather-treated metals, which won't rust in the rain.
(Iron scrolled wall plaque, $119, homedecorators.com)

The Curb

"Brookside is not a cookie-cutter suburb," say Kelly and Todd Powell. The couple loves their 1930s home for its old, classic look and their neighborhood's tree-filled streets.

Steal the Idea: Arched Door

On houses with lots of peaks and sharp angles like this one, an arched door adds softness. Plus, it has a charming cottage-in the-woods feel.
(Rustic arch entry door, $1280, doors4home.com)

Steal the Idea: Lantern

A single porch light does the trick, but go for a pair (one on each side of the door) if you want symmetry and some extra glow.
(Medium bronze modern grill rectangular outdoor light, $189, shadesoflight.com)

The Curb

Lisa and Curt Chase say they get a lot of compliments on their yard. It's no wonder — when they first moved into their 1912 home in 2007 there was no landscaping at all and the couple worked hard to bring it to its current glory. "All the color really makes it come alive."

Steal the Idea: Trees in Urns

The Chases flanked their front entry with a pair of gardenia trees in urns. The pathway steps are decorated with a potted pink hibiscus tree.
(Acanthus urn in chocolate, $129, ballarddesigns.com)

Steal the Idea: House Numbers

They come in so many fonts — why not coordinate them with your house style? These script numbers pair well with a traditional Colonial.
(Gatehouse 4" aluminum black numbers, $1.50 each, lowes.com)

Steal the Idea: Door Handle

A shiny brass handle on a paneled door is like a string of pearls with a black dress: so classic!
(Arlington single cylinder handleset in antique brass, $130, kwikset.com for stores)

The Curb

Joyce Egan loves sitting outside on the front porch of her 1924 home. "I'll spend afternoons out here just relaxing and waving to neighbors," she says.

Steal the Idea: Lantern

A dark bronze lamppost that resembles a classic streetlight looks right at home in Joyce's hilly front yard. It lights up the landscape and the stairway leading to the front porch.
(Quoizel Carson weathered bronze outdoor post light, $161, lampsplus.com)

Steal the Idea: Stone Facing

Joyce's chimney is limestone. Get the look with an easy-to-install stone veneer.
(Ridgestone in honey, from $6 per square foot, plygem.com for buying info)

Steal the Idea: Roof

These sturdy asphalt shingles have a 3-D look that subtly mimics slate.
(Camelot lifetime designer shingles, $243 per 100 square feet, gaf.com for stores)
