Ban Beige With Colorful Contemporary

Designer Kim Myles delivers a family room from boring beige with a soothing blue, brown and yellow color scheme.

Built-In Media Center

Kim Myles gives the allusion of height in this low-ceiling family room with tall built-ins, soft blue paint and panels of flocked wallpaper. Design tip: Wall-to-wall built-ins are a great way to add function to otherwise long and bland walls; plus, they give you a space to seasonally arrange your accessories.

Paint colors:
Wall: Tide Pools 480E-2, Behr Flat Enamel
Ceiling: Country Mist 480E-1, Behr Flat Enamel

Three panels of flocked fabric wallpaper make a big visual statement in this family room. Here's how to make your own inexpensive fabric art:

Wooden frame
Staple gun

1. Build wooden frames from thin pieces of wood cut to size at your local home improvement store.
2. Lay out your fabric on a smooth surface and place the frame on top.
3. Fold one side of the fabric over the frame staple the fabric to the frame. Pull tightly to get a crisp edge, and repeat on all three sides.
4. Cut off excess fabric and hang in your room.
