At Home With Duane and Devi Brown

NFL player Duane Brown and radio personality Devi Brown have visited many exotic places, yet their favorite place to be is at home with each other. With the help of designer Laura Umansky, the Browns brought a fresh look to their newly renovated Texas home – with a touch of worldly style inspired by their travels. “I would see things I liked on Pinterest and Houzz and bring them to Laura so that she could see examples of my taste,” Devi says.

Bold Entry

Devi chose the striking cobalt blue paint for the couple’s front door. “Duane, and Laura our designer, were like ‘No Devi, it’s gonna look crazy.’ But I told them to just trust me on this one. And we all love it!”

Personal Touches

“I have always strived to make where I live be uniquely me,” Devi says. “I want to light up when I walk into my home, and I want others to be able to see my home and say ‘Oh yeah, this is where Devi lives.’”

Family Room

Function met style when the couple needed a solution for the problem of the media equipment remote’s signals not being able to penetrate the solid wood cabinet doors. “I fell in love with an Islamic style-keyhole design so we incorporated it into wood cutout panels for our media and master bathroom cabinets,” Devi says.

Retro Lounge

The couple transformed the space designated as the formal living room into a comfy cool lounge. The highlights of the room are the intricate hookah pipe, Venetian masks and liquor bar. “We were on a Mad Men kick and I decided we had to have a Don Draper-style bar,” Devi says. The ceiling serves as an accent wall, which is painted in a deep teal that complements the velvet chairs.

Chef-Friendly Kitchen

The couple’s kitchen has all the trappings of a chef’s dream workspace: extensive gas range, stainless appliances and large, solid granite countertops. But the space has chic and dramatic touches of color by way of the chandelier and barstool legs.

Sunny Dining Space

Devi says that the couple are homebodies when they’re in town, and Duane loves when she gets creative in their bright, white subway-tiled kitchen. “I’m kind of a foodie. Tonight I’m making red snapper with Thai chili sauce and quinoa,” she says. Above a planning center in the breakfast area hangs a gold-framed chalkboard on which Duane and Devi write reminders and inside jokes.

Formal Dining Room

“There are so many items in the dining room that we love,” Devi says. “Duane’s favorite is this picture of a horse (see it in the next photo), and mine is the chandelier.”

Entry Hall

In the entry hall just outside the dining room, visitors are greeted with an enormous Buddha head sitting atop the white Calacatta marble in the entry hall. “It’s one of my favorite pieces in the whole house,” Duane says.

Global Gallery Wall

One of Devi’s favorite spots in the home is their Instagram wall. “We have a gallery on our staircase walls with pictures of the two of us on our trips around the world,” she says. “There are a lot of pictures already but we hope to fill the walls completely to the ceiling.”

Master Bedroom

“We’re both tall people so we had this bed made to better fit us,” Devi says of their custom bed. To complete their bed, they also had a four-poster headboard and footboard with canopy and privacy drapes made to give the couple extra coziness.

Spa Bathroom

Duane and Devi went for a spa-like feeling in their shared bathroom with a stand-alone bathtub surrounded smooth, white stones, an oversized rainfall shower and natural wood chandelier. They splurged on a Japanese toilet with a heated seat.

Chic Seating Alcove

The textured wallpaper and African-inspired wall art add depth and interest to Devi and Duane's master bedroom sitting area.

Ultimate Man Cave

The theater room is outfitted with a projection system, five flat-screen televisions and custom seating complete with richly embroidered Texans logos on the headrests.

Sports Memorabilia

The theater’s decor consists of jerseys, footballs and mementos spanning Duane’s football career.

Home Exterior

Duane and Devi spent five months renovating their 4,800-square-foot Bellaire home. Before the renovations, Devi says the residence had a dark, Mediterranean feel. Duane describes the neighborhood as quiet with a lot of nice families.
