On Set With 'Mom'

CBS’s Mom follows Christy Plunkett (Anna Faris), a single mother of two who restarts her life in California’s Napa Valley after battling alcoholism and drug addiction. She shares her home with her mother, Bonnie (Allison Janney), her daughter, Violet (Sadie Calvano), and her son, Roscoe (Blake Garrett Rosenthal). Set decorator Ann Shea tells HGTV how she created a realistic – yet still appealing – home for this busy sitcom family.

Christy's Living Room

Since Christy (Anna Faris) is a single mom supporting two kids on a waitress’ salary, her home needed to look realistic but still attractive. “It couldn't look like she really spent any money on decorating,” said set decorator Ann Shea. “So we created her home’s look with things that seemed like they came from a flea market, thrift store or were found on the street.” Pops of color add a pleasant touch to the living room.

Christy's Kitchen

Like the living room, the show’s kitchen set looks comfortable and lived-in. To give the room a real-life look, set decorator Anne Shea often incorporates details like dishes in the sink or unpaid bills on the refrigerator. “We add all of those things in addition to the furniture to help tell the story about what life is like for this family,” she said.

Bedroom Set on CBS's 'Mom'

Christy’s bedroom features a colorful paisley bedspread and blue curtains. As a single mother of two, it’s not a huge surprise she didn’t have time to make the bed.

Violet's Bedroom

Shea said Violet’s bedroom is her favorite room on the show. “It’s more fun and whimsical and colorful than the rest of the house,” she explained.

Shopping for a Set

Shea says she rents most of the furniture and other items for the show from prop houses. She also likes to shop at HD Buttercup in L.A., Z Gallerie, Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, CB2, West Elm, Restoration Hardware, The Sofa Company and Blueprint Furniture.

The Burgundy Bistro

Mom takes place in California’s Napa Valley, and its influence can be seen on set, particularly in a restaurant called The Burgundy Bistro. “Everything is more idyllic and more charming and has more character in that region,” Shea said.

“Even the most glamorous places seem to have a little rustic flair to them,” Shea noted about Napa Valley. “I always bear this in mind when doing any set on the show.”

The Rustic Fig

Anna Faris’ character, Christy, works as a waitress at a Napa Valley restaurant called The Rustic Fig. “I love how it's clearly an upscale, established restaurant that's not trendy or current,” Faris said. “It's very rich in reds and burgundy colors, perfect for an establishment in wine country.”
