Before and After: West Coast-Style Home Makeovers You'll Love

See how Jillian Harris, the co-host and interior designer from HGTV's Love It or List It, Too , easily reimagines outdated spaces and turns them into modern miracles.

Before: Too Small to Entertain

Before: Small Kitchen and Dining Area

Before: Small Kitchen and Dining Area

KITCHEN, BEFORE: This kitchen/dining room combo wasn't ideal for the homeowners, who liked to cook and entertain. The kitchen had minimal counter space and guests had to take turns eating to have a seat at the table, as seen on HGTV's Love It or List It, Too .

These homeowners longed for a classy space where they could host dinner parties, but a tiny table and cramped kitchen just weren't cutting it.

After: Elegant and Spacious

Open Kitchen and Dining Room With Warm Wood Accents

Open Kitchen and Dining Room With Warm Wood Accents

In this open kitchen and dining room, warm wood elements connect the two spaces with their simple lines and earth tones. To balance the stainless steel appliances in the kitchen, cool gray dining chairs were paired with the wood dining table.

Love It or List It, Too co-host and interior designer Jillian Harris reworked the kitchen layout to create two stations in an open layout. A grander dining table for six sets the stage for lovely dinner parties to come.

Before: Packed Garage With Leaky Roof

Before: Garage With Leaky Roof

Before: Garage With Leaky Roof

GARAGE, BEFORE: The homeowners referred to their barely standing garage as "wet storage" because of its leaky roof. With clutter everywhere in disheveled piles, it was only taking up valuable space in their backyard, as seen on HGTV's Love It or List It, Too.

Yikes! This abominable before was in serious need of organization, and an unfortunate leak left wet clutter strewn about the space.

After: Peaceful Office Space

HLILIT105H_after-home-office-converted-garage_4x3

Since the homeowners were only using the garage to hold piles of clutter and paperwork, Jillian created a peaceful home office where they can keep things organized.

Before: Dated, Dark Bedroom

Before: Ragged and Run-Down Bedroom

Before: Ragged and Run-Down Bedroom

BEDROOM, BEFORE: Peeling wallpaper and mismatched furniture made this bedroom an eyesore, as seen on HGTV's Love It or List It, Too .

Improving this dated disaster wouldn't require much, but Jillian has big plans for this dark space, where even the wallpaper is trying to make a break for it.

After: Serene Blue Bedroom

Relaxing Blue Bedroom

Relaxing Blue Bedroom

A light color scheme and tall window treatments make the room look and feel spacious. The bed is equipped with a hydraulic system to provide hidden storage space to keep things organized and out of sight, as seen on HGTV's Love It or List It, Too.

By adding tall window treatments, Jillian was able to make the room feel much larger. A light, relaxing color palette creates a calming effect, while stylish new furniture ties the look together.

Before: Clutter to the Ceiling

Before: Cluttered Garage

Before: Cluttered Garage

GARAGE, BEFORE: The space in this garage wasn't being utilized to its full potential because it had become the house's main storage area, as seen on HGTV's Love It or List It, Too.

This cluttered garage lacked organization and was essentially wasted space in a home where space was at a premium.

After: Finally a Family Room

Lavish Lounge Area

Lavish Lounge Area

The walls were painted a warm, neutral color and custom-built furniture was brought in to transform the garage into a usable, relaxing space. Closets were installed to hide the garage door and to provide organized storage areas, as seen on HGTV's Love It or List It, Too.

Jillian opted to completely transform the garage into a more functional family room. Neutral walls and custom-built furniture look tranquil and inviting in this totally reworked space.

Before: Basic and Overflowing

Before: Toy-Filled Living Room

Before: Toy-Filled Living Room

Stark white walls, outdated furniture and toys everywhere made this living room more like a child's playroom than an adult living space, as seen on HGTV's Love It or List It, Too.

Toys, toys and more toys turned this already bland living room into a makeshift playroom. Jillian hoped to remove the toys and add some personality.

After: Smart Storage in a Stylish Space

Cozy Living Room With Storage Ottoman

Cozy Living Room With Storage Ottoman

Designer Jillian Harris painted the walls a warm neutral color and gave the old brick fireplace an upgrade with light-colored tiles. A coffee table storage ottoman keeps the kids' toys stowed away and everything looking neat, as seen on HGTV's Love It or List It, Too.

A storage ottoman keeps the toys out of the way when not in use and doubles as a comfy spot to put your feet up in the newly redesigned living room.

Before: Unorganized and Out of Control

Before: Unorganized Laundry Room

Before: Unorganized Laundry Room

LAUNDRY ROOM, BEFORE: This laundry room was an unorganized, catchall area that wasn't functional for the homeowners, as seen on HGTV's Love It or List It, Too.

Before Jillian got her hands on it, this laundry room was a major mess in need of a cleaning overhaul.

After: Everything in Its Place

Laundry Room with Ample Storage

Laundry Room with Ample Storage

This functional laundry room is done in grays and black and offers more than adequate counter and cabinet space. An area for hanging just-ironed clothes and a sink are included.

Once Jillian worked her magic, this space was brought back to its original purpose: a laundry room. Brand new cabinets provide excellent storage, so piles of clutter are a thing of the past.

Before: Outdated Space and Color Scheme

Before: Taupe and Copper Kitchen

Before: Taupe and Copper Kitchen

This confined kitchen was sporting old-school light fixtures and a tiled copper backsplash behind a tiny amount of counter space. The cabinets' L-shape isolated the room from the rest of the house, making it difficult for the homeowners to keep an eye on their young daughter, as seen on HGTV's Love It or List It, Too.

For this dated kitchen, the homeowners needed a refreshed look with a smarter layout that would make it easier to keep an eye on their young daughters.

After: Open and Practical

Sleek Eat-In Kitchen With Black Dining Table

Sleek Eat-In Kitchen With Black Dining Table

This eat-in kitchen features sleek cabinetry and a stunning stainless steel range hood. A simple black dining room table nestled in the kitchen makes the space feel cozy yet polished.

This open floor plan makes it easier to see everything that's going on in the home, and a sleek palette of blended neutrals creates a timeless look.

Before: Bad Lighting and Layout

Before: Dark Kitchen With Bench Seating

Before: Dark Kitchen With Bench Seating

KITCHEN, BEFORE: The bench seating in this kitchen made it difficult for more than four people to eat at once without being trapped in by the brick fireplace that sits in the middle of the room, as seen on HGTV's Love It or List It, Too .

In this painfully-dark before, bench seating and an awkward brick fireplace made it difficult to gather around the table.

After: Bright and Reborn

Bright and Airy Kitchen

Bright and Airy Kitchen

Designer Jillian Harris reconfigured the cabinets to the opposite wall so the homeowners could keep the fireplace but also have space for a large island. French doors open up to the patio and let in natural light to make the kitchen feel more open, as seen on HGTV's Love It or List It, Too.

After the makeover, this space looks like an entirely different room. Jillian was able to keep the fireplace by moving the kitchen cabinets. She even created enough space to add a kitchen island.

Before: Underutilized Storage Closet

Before: Small Storage Closet

Before: Small Storage Closet

STORAGE CLOSET, BEFORE: This closet created more wasted space than storage space and the family's laundry was left to sit on the floor, as seen on HGTV's Love It or List It, Too.

The homeowners simply weren't making the most of the storage space this closet provided.

After: Makeshift Mudroom

Orderly Lockers as Storage Closet

Orderly Lockers as Storage Closet

The closet was removed and custom-built lockers were installed to keep the kids' sports gear organized, as seen on HGTV's Love It or List It, Too.

In order to keep all the kids' sports gear organized and at the ready, Jillian installed custom-built lockers for easy, kid-friendly storage.

Before: Outdated Cabinets

Before: Outdated Kitchen

Before: Outdated Kitchen

KITCHEN, BEFORE: This kitchen was fairly spacious, but the wood cabinets and dark green countertops hadn't been updated in 30 years, as seen on HGTV's Love It or List It, Too.

Green countertops and cabinets that were over 30 years old were major eyesores in this outdated kitchen.

After: Cool and Contemporary

Modern White and Mint Green Kitchen with Dinette

Modern White and Mint Green Kitchen with Dinette

This kitchen in tones of gray, white, and mint green has a distinctive modern look. Minimalist cabinets offer plenty of storage and the small dinette with upholstered gray seating and contemporary white dining table provides a place to enjoy a light meal or cup of tea. The distinctive lighting fixtures contribute to the modern look. An elegant white flower arrangement in blue vase adds color while the white subway tile backsplash adds visual interest. A separate kitchen island with white counter and matching dark wood adds both style and function.

A neutral color palette brightens the kitchen, while new cabinets and a stunning tulip table bring the space into the 21st century.

Outdated Living Room in Fixer Upper

Outdated Living Room in Fixer Upper

Emily & Gary purchased a 3000 square foot fixer-upper with money left to them by Emily's grandfather. Now, three years later, they've yet to complete a project and are getting tired of the cramped, outdated conditions. Emily hopes Jillian can turn their out of date nest into her dream home, while Gary hopes Todd can find them a move-in ready house, as seen on Love It or List It, Too.

This house had obvious potential, but the homeowners had a hard time seeing past the boring, cramped before.

As seen on Love It or List It, Too, designer Jillian Harris renewed Emily and Gary's home by modernizing the fireplace and adding unique accent pieces to the mantel to make the space unique.

A bright white fireplace instantly brightens the look of this once-dated home, while unique art and accent pieces add personal flair.

Outdated Cabinets and Updated Appliances

Outdated Cabinets and Updated Appliances

Gary and Emily's kitchen in this house is cramped and small. The appliances are new and in good condition, but a spruce where the cabinets are concerned could do nothing but help this outdated space. As seen on HGTV's Love It or List It Too.

This kitchen already had new appliances, but the dated cabinets left something to be desired.

Glass Front Cabinets Create Open Feeling

As seen on Love It or List It, Too, designer Jillian Harris designed an open and modern kitchen for homeowners Emily and Gary, with new cabinetry and applicances. The white cabinets and clear glass doors keep the space feeling open and light.

Jillian kept the appliances but surrounded them with new white cabinets to instantly brighten up the space.

Before: Dated '60s Cooking Space

As seen on HGTV’s Love It Or List It, Too - Homeowners Nicole and Tony fell in love twenty years ago at university. They got married, and when their second baby was about to be born, they fell in love with their current home. Built in the sixties but featuring an open concept, the house is actually built on a rock, giving it a uniquely beautiful character, not to mention a gorgeous view of the water. Now their two girls are approaching adolescence and Tony is starting to feel like 2200 square feet is just not enough. He gave up his TV room for office space a few years ago and is sorely missing a place away from the high energy chatter and girly activities that are always going on. He is tired of their vintage eighties-look kitchen that is in need of updating and repair. The main floor bathroom features a lingering mildew odour and needs some serious TLC in order to function for the four people that have to use it. They do have a second bathroom downstairs, but it is small and currently not useable due to leaky pipes. Nicole will not even discuss her husband’s desire to move. Her passion for this home has endured over the ten years since they bought it and she won’t hear of any plans to leave. She agrees with Tony that the kitchen and bathrooms are sorely in need of attention, but that’s an easy fix. Jillian can transform them to magnificent in no time! And besides, their daughters love their nearby school, their street is very family friendly, their neighbours are lovely and they have family living close by. Todd will never be able to find them a new house with all that. Tony disagrees. Maybe it’s time to move back into the city. Commuting more than a half hour each way over a bridge every day is tiring. And the issues in their nearly 60 year old house are not worth fixing. He is ready to move into something fresh and modern with enough working bathrooms for everyone and a fabulous kitchen with lots of space for entertaining. A real l

Though the homeowners were once in love with this unique kitchen built in the 1960s, they both agreed it was long overdue for an update.

After: New Lease on Life

As seen on HGTV’s Love It Or List It, Too - Designer Jillian Harris modernized this west coast home by removing a pillar that sat in the middle of the entrance. She painted the walls with Behr Cotton Knit and installed engineered hickory hardwood flooring with Tremblant stain. The kitchen entrance was removed and the pantry and office desk area were closed in to create the laundry room. The Ceasarstone kitchen countertops, London Grey and Stone Grey, were extended along the back wall. Jillian removed another pillar in the centre of the kitchen and modernized the existing island with clean straight lines. Jillian completes the kitchen with Antique Imperial Mist subway tile for the backsplash. (AFTER 13)

Caesarstone countertops, a more modern kitchen island and a delicate wall color give this kitchen just the right amount of modern-meets-classic style.
