In the Mood to Garden? Try These 6 Ideas to Get You Started

Check out these trending products and must-have tools to nurture your budding interest in gardening.

Spring is springing and all I can think about when sitting at my desk or driving my car is being in my garden. Plant, sprout, grow — it’s enough to make me smile just thinking about it. If you’re just now getting bit by the gardening bug, it’s time to dig in and give it all you’ve got. But it helps to have the right tools for the job. Here are some of my favorite gardening goods for anyone stretching a green thumb now.

1. Water In Style

My gardening mentor gave me my first good galvanized watering can a few years ago and it's still my favorite gardening tool. A strong galvanized watering can will last way longer — and look decidedly more professional — than a plastic version. Look for one that distributes water gently like rain.

2. Cook With Herbs

Yes, herbs can grow indoors if you have plenty of sunlight, and what better location than right there in the kitchen where you need them most? Herbs can be planted in jars, but be sure not to overwater since you won’t have drainage. Even better, pick an herb planter specifically designed for growing indoors.

3. Show Some I.D.

Even if you know a plant like rosemary, having identifying plant markers in your garden helps create a sense of learning, and it certainly helps when you get into more obscure plants or varieties that no one could remember without help. You can make your own vintage-inspired ones using old silverware or take the easy road and buy a pack of colorful ones.

4. Hang It Up

Vertical gardening isn’t just for apartment dwellers anymore (though it’s still ideal for anyone with a small patio). I’m especially in love with wall planters meant for succulents like I’ve seen in California. Even though I live in a semi-tropical climate, I yearn for the desert sometimes. Go figure.

5. Grow Geometric

Geo planters have been trending for a couple years now and, frankly, I’m not tired of them at all. I love their sculptural quality and midcentury modern vibe. Glass versions lend a terrarium look but molded options are also quite cool and feel more solid and substantial, like they’re carved from rock.

6. Potting Pretty

After you’ve really gotten into gardening, as with any hobby, you’ll notice pots and other materials piling up. Organize them with a potting bench — there are many options to suit your space. Even if you find a bare wood one, you can always spruce it up DIY-style with a simple coat of stain or paint.
