Sand Art for Grown-Ups: Just Add a Votive Candle!

Remember this super-easy craft you did as a kid? Here's how to turn it into a stylish accent piece for your next summer gathering.

Have fun outside and learn a new skill this summer with HGTV's camp-themed series! We'll be sharing grown-up takes on camp crafts, delicious campfire recipes and ways to make backyard camping more luxurious. Follow along using #summercampweek all week long!

Sand art has to be one of the easiest crafts out there, which is why it's a perennially popular activity for kids. For those who missed out, you simply layer colorful sand in a bottle or jar, and voila! You have a cute — though not exactly functional — finished craft. If your parents are the sentimental type, your old sand art is probably stashed in a box somewhere in their garage.

Pour layers of sand into a glass vase, alternating colors with each layer. For a more interesting look, try uneven layers in various heights. Keep layering sand until you’re a few inches from the top of the vase. Place your votive candle in the center of the sand. Continuing layering sand around the outside of the candle. (This is where the funnel may come in handy.) Keep going until you’ve reached the top rim of the candle. Optional: Using a wooden skewer, create patterns in the sand. Light the candles and enjoy!

Now that you're all grown up, make sand art you can proudly display by simply adding a votive candle. It's just as easy as the art you made as a kid, but with this simple update, it can serve as a practical, stylish accessory for your next get-together. Group several together on a table as a centerpiece, or spread them out for all-around illumination.

I chose to pair neutrals with one bold accent color per candle, but you can customize this craft to complement any decor or occasion — just think of the possibilities!
