Take a (Virtual) Trip Inside an Updated 1970s Aluminum Trailer

See how a Nashville couple used bright colors and a cheery pattern to transform the inside of a vintage Avion aluminum trailer.

The exterior look of aluminum-clad travel trailers haven't changed much over the decades, which is probably why companies like Airstream and Avion have developed such a cult following.

But just because fans of the iconic trailers love the ageless exteriors doesn't mean they want to spend extended amounts of time in an interior that hasn't changed in 40 years.

When a client offered Nashville architect Bill Johnson a chance to purchase and renovate a 1972 Avion Le Grande trailer, he and wife Cathy jumped at the opportunity. Johnson envisioned the Avion trailer as a perfect spot to lay his head during fishing trips to the Piney River in Tennessee. But first it needed some updating.

The first step was to replace the existing — and very old — mechanical systems to get the trailer up and running again. But in considering their options, the Johnsons realized the interior didn't need to be gutted and replaced. It just needed a facelift.

The existing appliances and cabinets are original to the trailer, but a coat of white paint and some new Plexiglas inserts in the upper cabinets gave the entire interior a more modern feel.

The use of white and gray throughout the trailer makes the entire space feel more open. The Johnsons also stuck to a single pattern — a Waverly fabric that Cathy turned into curtains and pillows — to add a pop of color while unifying the different living areas in the trailer.

The sleeping quarters with twin beds and bathroom are located in the rear of the trailer, though the dining area at the front can be converted into a full-sized bed if preferred or needed.
