See How This Dairy Farm Bathhouse Makes Extra Space for Guests
I'm forever dreaming of quiet little getaway spots where I can spend a weekend reading, writing and resting. Those dreams usually involve a sweet little cottage or cabin in a pastoral setting. Well, designer Heidi Richardson plucked one of these spots straight from my dreams and created it on a California farm.
Richardson worked with the owners of a dairy farm to create a spot to accommodate their guests in a “family camp” environment. The result was this adorable, 260-square-foot bathhouse with sleeping quarters that perfectly fits the setting of the farm.
Richardson selected red-and-white gingham bed linens and vintage, Shaker-style furniture to match the cottage style of the bathhouse’s architecture. There’s also a small closet in the corner whose door mimics the style of the doors on the barn nearby.
The bathhouse serves both the sleeping quarters inside of it as well as a collection of nearby platform tents, so Richardson added two toilets, two showers and plenty of shelving space for towels and toiletries to accommodate a crowd. Sign me up! I’ll be there shortly!
Small Low Country Cottage With Farmhouse Feel
Designer Lisa Furey's challenge was to design and build a 690-square-foot low country cottage that would include a kitchen, laundry area, bedroom and workspace as well as outdoor space. Board and batten siding, a standing seam metal roof and board and batten composite shutters — all weather-proof choices — give the exterior a farmhouse feel.

Small Living Room Feels Bright, Open
Large windows fill the small living room and kitchen with natural light, creating a bright, airy atmosphere that works to make the space feel larger. The custom sectional is designed to sleep an extra guest.
Barn Door Conceals Laundry Area in Open Concept Living Room
A barn door, which works beautifully with the modern farmhouse aesthetic seen throughout the home, conceals a stacking washer and dryer to maximize square footage. A sleek glass coffee table keeps from visually crowding the room, creating a sense of more space.
Small White Kitchen Boasts Modern Farmhouse Look
A vaulted ceiling, clean white walls and a front door with large glass panels help make this small kitchen and living area feel bright and open. White Shaker cabinetry conceals a small refrigerator, full-sized dishwasher, microwave and toaster oven. A farmhouse sink and barn-style pendant lights speak to a modern farmhouse aesthetic — as does the open shelving with beadboard backing. Saddle-style barstools provide additional seating.
Breezy White Bedroom With Woven Wood Shades
White walls, large windows and a vaulted ceiling make this bedroom feel light, breezy and open. Reclaimed heart pine floors offer warmth and contrast. Woven wood shades allow light to filter through while still providing shade and relief from heat.
