How to Get in on the Urban Boho Trend

It's just like boho...but more sophisticated.

Boho has taken the design world by storm over the past few years. But we’ve noticed a new trend lately as a new variation of boho is starting to emerge: Urban Boho.

Urban boho is an updated version of the design style that feels a bit more fresh and modern. It takes all the most popular elements of boho (Rattan, macramé, brightly colored pillows and textiles), but also adds a new spin on things by pairing these elements with a variety of unexpected decor and furniture.

We want to show you exactly what we’re talking about, so we’ve combed through Instagram to find the 10 most inspiring urban boho images we could round up. Keep reading to learn about all the best ideas for how you can bring some more of this new urban boho design trend into your home.

Here’s your urban boho to-do list:

1. Use Leather

Leather is a great, anything-goes material to use when creating your urban boho look. This buttery leather caramel sofa serves as the perfect focal point in this boho-tastic living room. Paired with fringe-y, sequin and mudcloth throw pillows, the variety of textures works perfectly together.

2. Modern Furniture Is Your Friend

Here’s a glossy, white, modern coffee table surrounded by all the traditional boho elements: vintage textiles, plants and a Moroccan rug. The table, however, feels unexpected and unique in that space and serves as a great counter-balance to all of the color and texture.

3. Keep A Tighter Color Palette

Unlike straight-up boho spaces which can sometimes feature a color explosion, urban boho spaces tend to make use of a tighter color palette. In this example, a sleek banquette area features a variety of vintage Moroccan pillows but within a very specific palette. All other elements in the space are neutral, creating a much more pulled together vibe.

4. Pair A Bold Floor with Simple Walls

Traditional boho often features bold elements anywhere and everywhere, but urban boho is a bit more subdued. Here we have a gorgeous, bold floor with hand-painted, Moroccan-inspired tiles paired with a simple black slat wall. The dark color helps to showcase the unique tiles, allowing it to be the true centerpiece of the space

5. Antique Furniture Works Too

This sweet little girl’s room uses a beautiful antique bed as a focal point in the space. Boho accents all throughout the room pair perfectly with the bed, creating a super sophisticated, but still fun, kid’s space. Again, we see an urban boho go-to here: using a tighter color palette.

6. Try A Bold Wallpaper

This bold pink and black swan wallpaper is the perfect choice for a chic urban boho dining room like this one. The simple fringe accent on the modern table, the wicker light fixture and the vintage textile seat covers with the traditional chairs create a ton of visual interest in the room.

7. Bring In Some Natural Wood

Natural wood pieces are another material that really works well with urban boho spaces. In this bright living room, a natural wood coffee table brings just the right amount of texture into the space. While the couch itself is tailored and modern, all of the boho pillows and textiles bring a unique warmth to the space.

8. Create Some Boho Storage

One of the easiest ways to bring an urban boho vibe to your storage solutions at home is to use baskets. For a more pulled together look, use similar baskets to those in this entryway. For a bit more variety, you can combine several different types of baskets, but try to stick to the same color family for all of them.

9. Unify With Textiles

Vintage textiles are almost always used in boho spaces, but urban boho tends to feature textiles like the ones used on this porch. There are a variety of rugs here, but the two white striped textiles are used to unify the space and create some symmetry.

10. Use Outdoor Furniture Inside

Another great trick when creating an urban boho space in your home is to use outdoor furniture inside. These lovely outdoor chairs look perfectly at home around this dining table. Wicker or rattan outdoor furniture can also work great as accent chairs in a living room or even an end of the bed bench.
