10 Tips to Style Your Kitchen Like a Pro

Master the art of the #shelfie once and for all.

As I'm sure most design junkies do, I follow lots of designers on Instagram. I have to be honest, it can be a love-hate relationship at times — for instance, when I'm drooling over an insanely gorgeous bathroom, and then I snap back to the reality of the mauve faux-tile that lives in my actual bathroom. Well, anyway, I've really come to take solace in styling the spaces in my home that I actually do like. One of those is my kitchen. I spend more time than I'd like to admit scrolling through kitchen vignettes, and I've found some tricks of the trade. So, today I'm sharing my top 10 kitchen styling tips, along with a few of my favorite Insta kitchens.

Show Off Your Charcuterie + Cheese Boards

Cutting and serving boards are totally trendy right now, and you can find beautiful wood and marble varieties at just about any store offering kitchenware. Chances are, you already have one or two. So, instead of leaving them in the cabinet, put them on display. Layer them to add architectural interest to a countertop, or hang them to break up a monochromatic backsplash.

Let Those Leaves Trail

Houseplants with trailing leaves look fabulous situated on open kitchen shelves. If you're in the market for a new plant, consider a philodendron variety, as they're typically easy to grow. Set your leafy beauty atop your highest shelf, and prepare for some killer #shelfies.

Hang Flatware + Cutlery on the Wall

Dress up an empty backsplash with pretty silverware or cutlery. A magnetic knife rack will do the trick for knives, while cutesy hooks — or even a washi tape and string combo — can display your favorite flatware.

Mix Matte Black With Earth Tones

I'm loving the resurgence of earthy materials like terra cotta, especially when paired with moody, matte blacks. The combo looks dynamite in a kitchen, and it's easy to recreate with just a few of the right accessories.

If You've Got It (a Wooden Spoon Collection), Flaunt It

This one's super-simple. Do you have a lot of wooden spoons crowding your utensil drawer? Toss them in a modern utensil holder on your countertop, and you've got height plus natural color, all in a matter of five minutes.

Feed Off Your Fruit

… But not literally, because then there will be none left for styling (gasp!). In all seriousness, fruit is the perfect way to add a pop of color to your space. It also helps to inspire further color. Use your fruit bowl to guide your accessory selection.

Mix Patterns

So, you have a patterned backsplash? Or maybe just a geometric tile backsplash? Don't let that stop you from introducing more pattern. Let your accessories bring your space to life; just be sure to use a coherent color palette to tie the look together.

Add Colorful Accessories to an All-White Background

All-white kitchens are everywhere, and don't get me wrong — they're beautiful. But a bold splash of color can go a long way when you're styling a bright, white space. It's as easy as searching through your cabinets and pulling out your favorite colorful vase or dish.

Try a Hanging Plant

In my quest to become a #plantlady, I've spent hours looking at hanging planters (and finally decided to DIY one!). The instant life a hanging plant brings to a space is unmistakable. If you can't quite figure out what your kitchen is missing, it's probably a hanging plant.

Choose Chic Cleaning Products

Oh, the gratification of finding products that work and are pretty, too! Soap design goes a long way in the world of styling, my friends.
