Figure AThere have been many innovations in the design of blinds and shades. They now provide coverage and beauty with the softness of a drape and the functional appeal of a blind. The results are smart designs that go from fun to formal:
- Twenty or 30 years ago, homeowners had virtually no choices in window coverings--everyone used white or almond metal blinds. Today there is a multitude of choices when considering how much privacy and light control is needed.
- Blinds in a child's room provide maximum light blockage but since dangling cords are a safety issue, use cordless ones with multiple colored slats that are pushed up and down.
- Sheer blinds are perfect for a soft diffusion of light that lends a romantic feel, which can be closed for privacy. They are available in vertical blinds for sliding or French glass doors that provide privacy while creating a soft transition to the outdoors. These can be opened completely for easy access in or out.
- Roman shades made of woven woods block out unwanted light while taking advantage of the design trend toward natural materials, which enhance the warmth and decor of a room.
- Use a fabric-etching solution to make a customized decorative shade for a sheer pattern on a solid fabric. For a more permanent treatment, use an etching solution on a glass window for privacy and light.
