When space and/or money are a consideration, build a piece of furniture to do the job.1. The featured desk needed to tie into the existing bookcase.
Since the depth of the bookcase is only 12 inches, Fox created an angle that softened the transition from 12 to 24 inches (figure A). It looks nice, and is safer than a sharp right angle jutting out into the room.
2. Use 3/4-inch birch plywood to make the top and add a border made of a 1" x 3 " piece of poplar to give the desk visual stability. Use a router with a straight bit to create an edge detail (figure B).
3. Put a backsplash made of 1" x 3" poplar where the desk meets the wall. Poplar will bend, allowing it to follow any curvature of the wall, making the desk look like an even better fit.
