Before: The homeowners think these high ceilings make their pieces look like doll furniture and this arrangement creates a huge open area in the middle of the loft. There’s also no definition of the three different functions of the space – sleeping, working and reading.

After: Moving the large bookcase to the center and building two flanking storage cabinets connected by a bridge creates three distinct areas in the loft – an office in front of the bookcase unit with the bedroom behind it and a reading nook to the side.

Before: The couple is open to making their bedroom area more private while an attempt to complement the baby blue wall color of the original textile mill by painting the other walls a deeper blue makes the wooden furnishings and the entire space dark and drab.

After: Soft beige walls accent the baby blue wall and lighten the feeling in the loft. A fresh coat of black paint and new brushed silver hardware on the existing furniture provides a sleek, updated look for the new reading nook.

Before: The office area is useful, but cluttered so it's not functioning as well as it could. It's also oriented with the desk facing a wall so the view of the loft isn't being utilized.

First-time homeowners Jason Winders and his fiancée, Amy Miles, want to turn their 100-year-old textile mill loft into a comfortable and cozy tri-functional area. Fourth-year University of Georgia interior design student Trudy Flores achieves their lofty goals in two days with only $3,000 by cleverly rearranging the furniture, adding more lighting and introducing soothing colors.
