Variant Flooring

Bed & Bath Design : Episode BDE-1203 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Kohn joins Pamela Karlyn Mazow to explore the options of variant flooring, which refers to the use of different flooring materials within a room or space. Using distinctive flooring can help define function in a multi-use room, as well as add texture and interest to the overall design.

Area rugs soften a hard floor, add color and texture to a space, and create a boundary.
  • When you use a different flooring, it signifies a change in the space.
  • One of the most popular choices for flooring in the bed area of master suites is wall-to-wall carpeting, which makes the space feel warm and inviting. It creates a soft, private feeling.
  • Stones and tiles, due to their hard surface and water-repellent capabilities, are usually chosen for the bath. Smaller stone sizes, like a 4x4, are often chosen for the flooring in the shower because the additional grout lines help create a less slippery surface.
  • When choosing flooring for a master suite, begin with a color palette. Different flooring in different spaces needs to relate back to the master color scheme, and this should help all the choices remain compatible.
  • Thresholds allow you to change the material and/or color of your flooring.
  • With an open floor plan you could use two or three different materials for flooring. In a smaller space, consistency in flooring helps pull the eye to the perimeter of the room, making it feel larger.
  • The larger the scale of the material, the larger the sense of space in a room will be.
  • View samples of different floorings together before beginning installation.
