Ultimate Mudroom

Country Style : Episode COS-402 -- More Projects »
When you look at this Portland, Oregon, mudroom with its gorgeous antique furnishings, flower preparation area and 300-plus book library, mud is the last thing that comes to mind. It's the private workspace of flower grower and passionate cook Sharon Sabin. She calls it her "creativity center" and it was designed by her husband Peter (an architect) when they retired in 1994.

One end is a state-of-the-art flower prep area (figure A) with a deep sink, high-neck faucet and special racks overhead for drying fresh flowers (figure B). A French butcher's table serves as the center island. The opposite side of the space contains the library and work area (figure C). Built-in bookcases hold hundreds of her favorite decorating, gardening and landscaping books. A ledge at eye-level provides a convenient spot for displaying collectibles. The work space consists of an antique French dining table and a turn-of-the-century stand-up desk with storage for her seed catalogs inside. An original stained-glass panel of sunflowers adorns the entry door.
