AfterHe Said, She Said
Things are a bit unsettled between Ron and LM Jobson when it comes to turning their extra bedroom into a comfortable lounge. The core of Ron and LM's dilemma is with the overall style of the room. Ron envisions a vintage mid-century-styled room complete with modern furnishings, sleek surfaces and cast aluminum sconces. LM, in keeping with the architecture of the house, envisions a hacienda-styled room with wrought-iron sconces and a mossy green wall color. Ron, however, doesn't share LM's desire for earth tones. He envisions a wall color with a modern edge to it.
Shopping for Solutions
Designer Michael Payne proposes a large, clean-lined sectional sofa in a neutral easy-to-clean fabric, a brushed metal credenza to display the TV on and a bookshelf for additional storage space. He also suggests warming up the room with window treatments, an area rug and sconces. The difficulty is getting LM and Ron to agree on the details.
Their first shopping stop is for fabric. Payne suggests a suede velvet fabric in a neutral color for the sectional sofa. Next they must find accent fabrics for pillows to complement the sectional sofa. This will also determine the room's color palette. Ron prefers vintage fabric, but LM wants a warm hacienda fabric with a tropical flair. Payne's compromise suggestion is a vintage tropical fabric. A monkey fabric also catches LM's eye. Ron is willing to go along with both fabrics as long as he gets his way with some of the other elements in the room.
Payne, Ron and LM's quest continues as they shop for a credenza to display their TV. Ron wants the TV placed on top but LM prefers that it be hidden. LM is willing to compromise, however, as long as there is hidden storage. LM not only compromises on the credenza, but also discovers a new appreciation for mid-century furniture.
A Happy Ending
Now that Ron and LM's design journey is over, Payne pays the Jobsons a visit to see how all of the elements have come together. Their new lounge blends Ron's need for vintage mid-century with LM's desire for a warm hacienda and tropical feel. Both Ron and LM got just what they wanted after all.
