Trompe L'oeil Decoration

Decorative artist Jennifer Tostenson demonstrates the decorative painting technique known as trompe l'oeil.

Materials:

column stencil
decorative paints
stencil brushes
adhesive

Steps:


  1. Spray stencil with stencil adhesive. Some stencils are to be applied in layers. Be sure to follow manufacturer's directions.

  • Place stencil against wall and pounce with a small stencil brush (figure A) until desired shade is achieved.

  • Continue to pounce the column, then move onto the base piece until finished. Periodically peel the stencil back and check your design. You may need to back over part of the design to achieve the desired look.

  • Add a variety of colors for shading and highlighting (figure B). This is usually done while stenciling, not after. This will give your design more depth and add a realistic look to it.

  • You can embellish your stencil with some simple freehand techniques using small art brushes.
