Tranquil Music Room and Retreat
Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-206 -- More Projects »
Musician Jeremy Toback and his wife Fabienne want to turn their disorganized guest room into a serene retreat that can be used as Jeremy's music room and as a place to relax with their young son, Miles.
The DilemmaSam Kivett and his design team of Charles Burbridge and Summer Baltzer discuss the issues and decide to replace the queen-size bed and mismatched window treatments, cover the outdated linoleum floor and make room for Jeremy's typewriter and guitars while keeping in mind the simple, Asian style the family wants in the room.
The Solution- The walls are painted a deep purple color to coordinate with the light lavender paint already on the window mullions.
- Burbridge creates a custom futon frame for under $100. He creates a 9' x 4' frame, which provides ample room for a mattress and ledge. He stains each 2x4 and attaches them to the frame with nails.
- Kivett brings extra seating into the space with an upholstered ottoman.
Baltzer creates a shoji-like screen to replace the cumbersome closet doors. She first installs double-rod hardware near the ceiling. Next, she cuts and sews two muslin fabric panels to the appropriate dimensions and stitches a pocket hem at the top and bottom of both. She inserts a 2x2 into each pocket and attaches three eye hooks to the 2x2s at the top. The panels are then thread onto metal rods.
Ambiant lighting is brought in through a pair of sconces flanking the futon. First, Kivett creates a rectangular wood frame out of dowel rods. For the shade, he glues and staples heavyweight vellum paper to the frame. To maintain a cylindrical shape, he forms scrap metal into an arc and secures it to the frame with plastic ties. Under-cabinet fluorescent lamps are used as the light source.

Burbridge creates a small water feature to further the Asian-style design. He begins with a medium-size planter and drills a hole into the side the same size as the cord on a small water pump. Next, he threads the cord through the side of the pot and seals it with aquarium/marine silicone. A piece of vinyl hose is attached to the pump. Water and lava rocks are added to the pot, along with stalks of bamboo. More lava rocks are added to cover the stalks and the vinyl hose is cut about an inch above the water level.A terra-cotta colored sisal rug solves the flooring issue, the windows are covered with new matching curtains and an adjustable table holds Jeremy's typewriter.
