Alternative Design: Use screws to secure a wooden dowel between two wooden bases to create a simple and pretty herb-drying rack.
Materials:

5" x 5" square of wood
dowel
drill & bits
candleholder
hammer
T-nut
finial
double-sided screw
white glue
latex paint and supplies

Steps:

1. Give the 5-inch-square wood base a crackled look by brushing on white glue and then latex paint.

2. Add a dowel to one corner of the base. This will hold back the loose paper towels. Drill a 5/8-inch hole in the base, put glue on the bottom of the dowel and insert it into the hole.

3. Use an urn-shaped candleholder for the base of the towel holder. We suggest using industrial-strength glue to adhere it to the wood base.

4. Use another dowel that is 1 inch in diameter and also painted. This will hold the paper towels. Drill a hole into one end of the dowel and hammer a T-nut into the hole. T-nuts are threaded inside and can be found at most hardware stores.

5. Top off the towel holder with a pre-painted finial. Use a double-sided screw so you can easily change out the paper when needed.

6. Apply industrial-strength glue into the hole of the candlestick and push the dowel in.
