Whether you collect NFL team caps or buy hats in all the places you travel to, this hat hanger will bring them the attention they deserve. Here’s how to make it:
Materials and Tools:
1-by-6-inch poplar board of desired length
1-by-3-inch poplar board of desired length
router with Roman-ogee bit
drill
glue
drywall screws
sandpaper
primer and paint
pencil
coat hooks
wooded buttons
awl or nail
molly bolts
Steps:
1.Use a router with a roman ogee bit attached to route one edge of the 1-by-6 and one edge of the 1-by-3.
2.Place the 1-by-3 on the 1-by-6, creating an L-shaped shelf. Attach the boards by drilling pilot holes with a countersink along the 1-by-3, running a bead of glue along the top edge of the 1-by-6, placing the 1-by-3 in position and secure with 1¼-inch drywall screws. Lightly sand the edges of the board and apply a primer and paint the color of your choice. If you want to be a little fancier, you could use oak boards and stain the hanger.
3.Place the hats along the 1-by-6, allowing a little space between them (I left about an inch). Make pencil marks where the hats should be placed and drill pilot holes for the screws that came with your coat hooks and attach. The hooks should be placed about 2 inches from the bottom of the 1-by-3.
4.To mount to the wall, drill four pilot holes evenly spaced along the board. Make the holes large enough so that small wooded buttons can be placed in them. The buttons will hide the screw heads once the hanger is attached to the wall.
5.Set the hanger in position, make sure it’s level and push an awl or nail through the pilot holes into the wall. This will indicate where to place self-anchoring molly bolts. Hold the hanger back in position and attach with drywall screws. Hide the screws with the buttons, and touch up with paint.
