Regardless the size of your closet, an organizing system with adjustable rods and shelves is crucial for keeping items in order. Organizing Ideas
- Baby clothes: Layette items should be available at the changing table/bureau for easy reach during frequent newborn changing. Utilize baskets, bins and containers that are designed specifically with the changing table in mind. Keeping like items together will help to create a system that will make staying organized easier. A well-designed closet will really help to keep all the little items of clothing together. Shelving fitted with appropriate containers and baskets is the best for keeping folded items organized and categorized. Small wooden hangers are great for special occasion clothing and to keep upcoming sizes of special clothing in view. Frequently, new parents receive lots of clothing as baby gifts so organizing it by size is key. For example if a baby fits in clothing in the 3-6 month category for the first few months, then bigger sizes should be containerized and labeled with size and season.
Store diapers, wipes and creams in a basket with handles so you can easily tote it from one room to another.Finding the Right Furniture
- Time frame is an important consideration. It is best to order furniture 12–15 weeks before the baby’s scheduled due date. This time frame will insure that furniture arrives, can be assembled and that other nursery components can be put into place.
- Consider how the furniture will fit in with the overall decor of the house and the size of the room.
- Ask yourself: Will the furniture be used for more than one child? If so, gender-neutral and classic styling is important. You wouldn’t want to purchase furniture that is so trendy it will feel dated by the time your second or third child is born.
Setting Up a Room for Siblings
Families that live in smaller city spaces are likely to be faced with tight quarters when a new baby enters the family. Space planning must really be considered. If an older sibling will be sharing the room, a design that is appealing to both children is a must. Colors and patterns that will stimulate both children as well as fun, functional furnishings will keep them both happy. Consider furnishings that allow for innovative storage such as a toddler bed with under-bed storage. A well-appointed closet will diminish the need for additional furniture pieces in the room.
