Texas and New England Antiques

Country Style : Episode COS-409 -- More Projects »
Two types of antiques that couldn't be much more different are those found in New England and Texas. But the simple beauty they have in common is an all-country winner. Antiques expert Nancy B. Krause shares the differences between these true American styles.

New England antiques are Anglo-influenced pieces that date from 1790 to 1860. Pieces include blanket chests, pewter cupboards, hutch tables and highboys.

Texas antiques reflect German craftsmanship and include pieces such as tables, wardrobes and rawhide chairs dating from 1870 to 1900. They are identified primarily by their tapered legs and are usually very sturdy pieces made of weighty Texas heart pine. A way to determine if a Texas piece is handmade is to examine the dovetailing on the drawer corners--if it looks irregular it's handmade, but if it looks uniform and near perfect then it was most likely machine-stamped.
