See the transformation of an unremarkable yellow bedroom of an 11-year-old girl into a whimsical, colorful room with features that will grow with her.

Makeover Room, after: $1,400

Layered several sophisticated tonal colors and finishes on the wall: painted a fresh mint green above a faux chair rail and baby blue wainscoting. The chair rail is painted to look like weathered wood, and the wainscoting has vertical lines that make it look like paneling.
Added decorative cables to a simple pine slat platform bed, which becomes the room’s focal point. (The bed is not actually suspended but rests on short legs. The cable merely gives the sense of loft and lift.)
Removed the closet doors and painted the inside walls a brilliant fuchsia. The shelves were lined with newspaper comics. A colorful plastic bead curtain was used for a door.
