Guest Judy Barker demonstrates three techniques: the symmetrical motif, the repeating border, and "taping out." With a few minor changes, the techniques work well on all surfaces. Brushes and sponges are both appropriate for stenciling.
Materials and Tools:
plain shelf liner paper
stencil
oil stick paints: Napthol Red, Sap Green and Ultramarine Blue
masking tape
three 3/8-inch stencil brushes
paper towels or soft cloth
waxed paper or foam plate
Steps:
- Roll out the shelf paper, and cut it to size.
- Secure the stencil to the paper with masking tape. To prevent the tape from damaging the shelf paper, reduce the tape's tackiness by applying it to fabric first.
- Remove the protective skin from the oil sticks and rub the colors onto a palette, waxed paper or foam plate.
- Swirl the bristles of a stencil brush through the paint, then tap or swirl the paint through the stencil. Work from the outside of the design to the inside. Apply lighter colors first, then apply dark colors. Color recipes include: red + blue = purple; red + yellow = orange. Lighten greens with yellow; darken areas with blue.
Tips:
- Oil sticks are creamy and blend nicely.
- Centers of designs may be left unpainted for a three-dimensional effect.
- Use a different brush for each color to maintain brilliant hues.
- Every three or four repeats, wipe the stencil and brushes with a dry cloth.
- Clean the brushes with soap and warm water or brush cleaner. Brushes must be completely dry before their next use.
- Keep an eraser nearby for removing smudges.
- Acrylic paints may also be used but are more difficult for beginners.
