Spanish-Style Bedroom

Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-307 -- More Projects »
Dan and Nicki Cotti want to transform their outdated country-style bedroom into a timeless Spanish retreat. The large room is full of country influences from the flowered closet doors to the green painted dresser and matching nightstands. It's apparent that the closet doors need a makeover and some of the furnishings will need some attention in order to accomplish the Spanish theme they're after.

The Dilemma

Lee Snijders meets with Summer Baltzer and Charles Burbridge to discuss a plan that will transform Dan and Nicki's country-style bedroom into a hacienda retreat. The design team wants to keep the furniture to save money and instead focus on accents and color to achieve the rustic Spanish look. Baltzer plans to refinish the existing furniture, while Burbridge focuses on the closet doors. Since the look is in the details, Snijders sets his sights on finding the perfect wrought-iron pieces at a metal supply company.

The Solution

Here's how the team uses color, fabric and accessories to transform the country-style bedroom into a rustic Spanish space:

  • A peanut shell paint color is mixed with glaze (four parts glaze to one part paint) and ragged onto the wall for a mottled, Old World faux finish. More faux finishes>>

  • Baltzer refurbishes the homeowners' dresser and side tables for a timeworn look. She strips and sands off most of the paint, leaving just enough to create a rustic effect. She applies a gel stain in the same tone of the homeowners' bed then seals each piece with a polyacrylic spray.

Video: Snijders shows how to create Spanish-inspired wall art using plywood, trim and wrought-iron accents.
  • Snijders visits a metal supply company in search of the perfect wrought-iron pieces to use in his custom wall accents. After making his selection, he has a professional weld the pieces together to create one wrought-iron accent for each side of the window. He creates two box frames out of 3/4" unfinished plywood and birch molding, which are stained to match the refinished dresser and side tables, and attaches the wrought-iron pieces with screws. They are then attached to the wall on either side of the long horizontal window.

  • Burbridge transforms the floral wallpapered closet doors with a custom stencil inspired by the wrought-iron pieces. He faux finishes the doors to match the walls and then stencils both doors with black paint. When dry, he applies a rust activator that causes the paint to oxidize, creating a rustic patina finish.

  • Accessories include luxurious bedding in warm colors, wrought-iron lamps and candleholders and a TV stand to complete the vignette with the side chair and floor lamp.
