Spanish-cottage style takes the natural earth tones of traditional Spanish style and pairs them with whitewashed furniture, soft colors, and lots of filtered light. It combines the character of a Spanish hacienda with the warmth and charm of cottage style. Design pro Angelo Surmelis started the makeover by painting the walls and ceiling soft taupe. A portion of the wall behind the bed is painted a burnt-orange color to create a focal point in the room. Then the baseboards are painted a chocolate color to help ground the space. The room is also anchored with a large area rug that fills the space making the room feel larger. To raise the homeowner's bed off the floor, a simple platform is built, then painted the same brown as the baseboards. Also added to the bed is a secondhand, metal headboard that was found online for just $50 (click on Headboard Project photo). New bedding in rich colors and vibrant patterns add a splash of bright color and texture to the room.
