The Dilemma

The Tabachs invite interior designer Kristan Cunningham into their home to peruse their spacious but bland master bathroom. The walls, counters and tiles are all white and in desperate need of color. The impressive size of the room lends itself to a spa theme. The whirlpool tub should be more of a focal point and the surrounding windows need to be dressed to better showcase them. Swapping out the plain light fixtures will add style and set a calming mood. The middle of the room is a vast empty space that needs to be filled and the disorderly wall of towels needs to be cleaned up.

The Solution

After Cunningham meets with design coordinators Spencer Anderson and David Sheinkopf, they come up with the perfect plan for turning the all-white room into a spa-style retreat. Here's how they do it:

  • The white walls are freshened with a coat of pale green paint that's reminiscent of sea glass.

  • Anderson constructs a seat-topped storage piece with miniature shelves along the perimeter to fill the center of the room. The bench is upholstered with a layer of two-inch-thick foam, batting and a terrycloth towel, complete with buttons for tufting.

  • Cunningham boosts the presence of the two wall mirrors by framing them with door casing.

  • Sheinkopf cleans up the wall of towels with a custom towel rack. He builds the piece out of medium-density fiberboard and uses 1/4-inch beadboard for a decorative touch. A chrome shower curtain bar is set inside to hold the towels and chrome robe hooks are attached on both ends.

  • The white wood blinds are replaced with off-white Roman shades that allow for a softer look.

  • The recessed lights over the counter are replaced with hanging pendants.

  • Accessories help bring the look together and include black-framed shadow box art, shells, candles and bamboo stalks in the corner by the tub. The black accents in the room balance the pastel hues and add substance to the spa design.
