In California, Santa Barbara's natural setting and Spanish heritage have been drawing tourists and artists alike for decades. Bob and Kim Fatch fell in love with the family-friendly area and found their dream house with a large yard.

That was 17 years and three kids ago, and Bob and Kim's family room has stayed pretty much the way they found it. The couple hopes a designer can help them rejuvenate the space.

After meeting with all the designers, the Fatches choose the team of Susan Brown Spieler and Lisa Davidson to redo their family room space. With a budget of $40,000, Spieler and Davidson blend old and new to create an active place for the family that can also be a tranquil, romantic retreat
