Today the Shoebox contained photographs of some of the most unusual "sculptures" I’ve ever seen...along with a sample of a "before" piece. All were contributed by Carolyn Lindsay of Marshall, Texas, who makes her artwork from roots and driftwood. Carolyn finds the roots in the roadside trash and the city dump and, in her words, "I just examine them until they ‘speak’ to me." She then cleans them with soap, water and a soft scrub brush and allows them to dry for two days. Carolyn also often uses a hack saw, a Dremel tool and always her imagination. The root that she sent to us she'd decided would become a short, fat person with a fluffy skirt. She uses acrylic paint and polymer clay to finish the pieces and then seals them. At the time Carolyn wrote us, her pieces would be found at The Weisman Center and the Marshall Visual Art Center in Marshall.

Our second letter in the Shoebox today came from Mary Holly of Gary, Ind., who sent in photographs of her once-boring black luggage that she made interesting and easy to distinguish from all the other black luggage by applying rub-ons to the surface. I was curious to see how tricky this might be and was surprised at how easily the pieces rubbed on and adhered to the surface of my luggage. Mary also coated the rub-ons with a protective coat of polycrylic clear gloss.
