Shingle Style Summer House

Host Joan Kohn visits the renovated master suite of Carolyn Lackey, who worked with designer Darin Mardock to uncover the original character of her cottage-style shingle home built 100 years ago.

The ornate mahogany bed was custom made for the renovated bedroom.

To create the master suite, several smaller rooms were combined into a suite that includes space for sleeping, sitting and storing clothes.

The windows in the reconfigured space were repositioned to bring in as much light as possible and to create easy furniture placement.
The walls are painted a warm persimmon, with an accent wall covered with wallpaper. Bedding is blue and white in contrast to the walls.
One of the goals of the renovation was to create room for a sitting area.
A slate and soapstone trough sink and wall-mounted faucets give the vanity a no-nonsense functionality.
The ceiling was raised to create a bigger sense of space.
Built-ins for storage were placed so they are not visible from the room’s entrance, and the focus is on the bed and seating.
The bathroom’s rustic sensibility is consistent with the original home’s design. Tilt-down windows, a claw-foot tub and beadboard wainscoting have the feel of a luxurious summer camp.
Natural materials are used throughout the bath: tumbled marble on the floor, slate and soapstone sink and counter, and stained wood wainscoting.
The dressing room was made large enough to hold bureaus for clothes storage, freeing up the bedroom for more sitting space.
