Shelves are great for storage and to display favorite items but have you ever thought about spicing up the back wall of the shelf or even the front of it? Cathy Still Johnson, homes editor of Coastal Living magazine, has some creative ideas for giving your shelf life.

  • Cut plywood inserts to fit the back of a wall of shelves. Spray paint one side a color to match your décor and attach map pieces to the opposite side with rubber cement.

  • Create a message board out of plywood, cork and colored burlap. Cut the plywood and cork to fit the interior of the shelf; attach the cork to the plywood with rubber cement. Cut a piece of burlap to size with a one-inch border, staple to the back of the plywood and set on shelf.
