Sectionals

Smart Design : Episode SDN-307 -- More Projects »
Sectional sofas are contemporary, comfortable and have a modern flair, plus they work in any size room. Kevin Burns gives tips on how to design a space by choosing pieces that have the right fit:

  • Today's sectionals are sleek, sophisticated and can be used in any configuration to anchor a room. Most have at least 10 different configurations, which makes it easy to plan a room. Be sure to ask for a catalog showing all the pieces, and therefore options, in a collection.

  • When purchasing a sectional, keep in mind where you are now and where you might be in the future. Smaller proportions make using the pieces in a new apartment or home easier.

  • Inspired to rearrange your furniture? Look for furniture slides at local hardware stores. They help move the pieces across all types of flooring from carpet to hardwood.

Combine different colors if you want, such as black and white. For a more graphic look, combine four colorful cubes to make one bold ottoman.

The great thing about a sectional is that it really fosters conversation. However, if you bought a sectional for a certain space, and then moved, you can separate the pieces. A chaise always looks great in a bedroom and a one-arm sofa piece can be put into any living room.
Homeowner Jessica Shapiro gets assistance from designer Jigna Shah in rearranging her sectional sofa to make her first living room cozy:

Jessica Shapiro was given a sectional by her mother and isn't sure she's making the most of it in her new living room.

Shapiro is too fun and playful for a linear living room, so Shah created the hippest-looking place on the block. She incorporated all five pieces for a fresh and dynamic arrangement.
