Host Joan Steffend and designer Ann Sundet take a small screened porch from drab to dramatic with new furniture and lots of color.

  • Cream paint and water are combined in a 2-to-1 mixture and applied to the walls and floor for a washed effect.
  • A faux rug is created on the floor with a red and teal painted plaid pattern.
  • The same paint treatment is applied to the top of a new table.
  • Garage-sale chairs are renewed with red paint and upholstered seats and backs.
  • Rattan chairs are outfitted with upholstered chair cushions and arranged in one corner for an alternate seating area.
  • An old chair is transformed into a small rolling ottoman. The legs are cut down and the back is cut off completely. The seat is upholstered and casters are added to the bottom for mobility.
  • A square wooden planter is made into a small side table. The planter is turned upside-down and the bottom is reattached to the new top. Spindles are cut down and screwed into the bottom to give it height. Berry red paint coordinates the look with the rest of the furnishings.
  • Tall plant stands are created out of terra-cotta pots stacked on top of each other.
  • The room is brought to life with the addition of drapery panels gathered at each mullion. The panels are stitched out of 40 yards of plastic-backed fabric normally used for shower curtains.
