Bringing the indoors out or the outdoors in is one of those special themes of country design that makes it so easy to live with. Designer Darren Whatley shares how he transformed the porch of a weekend retreat in Highlands, North Carolina, into a comfortable and inviting outdoor living space.
The long porch is divided into individual "rooms" for intimate gatherings. Furniture made out of bent willow, hickory and reed complement the rustic design. The back of the house is covered with rustic siding made from birch and hickory bark. The fireplace was constructed with river rocks to mirror the elements of nature, and interior doors were rebuilt with old barn wood painted a vintage blue-green. Using rustic furniture and country accessories, Whatley created an outdoor space that's perfect for entertaining or relaxing.
