Romantic Homes magazine says that the shabby chic look of yesterday, with its heavily-distressed furnishings and faded fabrics, is being replaced with a more polished, refined version. Romantic is the word that comes to mind, especially in Karen Mayo's home, where a neutral color palette and architectural salvage pieces combine for an elegant and ethereal design.
- Even though the home looks "all-white," Mayo says she has used over 30 neutral shades, from soft celadon to a muted lavender.
- Large-scale architectural pieces are the foundation of the dramatic romantic look. Columns are used to anchor the living room seating area, hinged doors are used as a divider screen and an armoire (so large it had to be brought in the home in seven pieces) provides space for the TV and other electronics.
