Quick and Whimsical Trompe L'oeil

Country Style : Episode COS-409 -- More Projects »
You don't have to be a trained artist to bring an artistic look into your home. Christy Crafton with Country Sampler Decorating Ideas magazine shares a few ways to accent your home with the French paint technique called trompe l'eoil (fool the eye).
A faux fireplace is made elegant with a trompe l'oeil finish. She first painted a base coat and then, using iron brackets for inspiration, created a line drawing on transfer paper and traced it onto the surface. Next, she outlined the design with light and dark gray artist's markers. By noticing where the light fell on the piece, she was able to create depth with the appropriate shading. A light sanding over the top creates a lightly weathered finish.
