Chinese tangram table
Retired aerospace engineer Jerry Slocum devotes all of his time to researching, writing about and collecting puzzles. He has created a "puzzle museum" in his house, which holds more than 29,000 puzzles from all over the world.

His collection, which he has been building for 60 years, includes everything from Chinese tangrams to the original Rubik's cube. His love for puzzles even landed him a spot on The Tonight Show, with Johnny Carson. For Slocum, as long as there's a new puzzle out there, there's a new challenge waiting!

Here are some quick tips on how to start your very own collection:

  • Look for older puzzles like 19th-century tangram puzzles made in China, Italy or France. They can be worth $300 and up.

  • Puzzle cups, mugs and jugs made between 1891 and 1906 in Mississippi by George E. Orr can be very valuable. In good condition each can be worth $1,000 or more.
