Project for Kids: Knots in a Box

Materials and Tools:

book about knots (Recommended: "The Everything Knots Book" by Randy Penn)
3 pieces of 4 ft long 1/2" static rope
12" x 30" frame with back
felt fabric (in any color)
permanent marker
white glue (strong sealing)

Steps:

First stop is the library. Ask your friendly librarian to help you find special books that show step-by-step guides to tying knots. The pictures should be big and bright so that you can follow along.
Next, choose your knot. Pick the one you like the best and that you think you can tie. In this episode, the boys tied "double figure eight," "double fisherman" and "bowline" knots.
When you have tied your knot, take the marker and write your name and the year on the side of the rope. That way, you’ll remember when you made this project.
Cut the felt to match the back of the frame. Glue the felt onto the back of the frame (the part inside the frame).
Glue the knot onto the back of the frame.
Hang your frame in your room to show the clever knot that you tied.
