Use items in groups of three for a pleasing, interesting effect, like this lamp, plate and flower. Note the stacked books used to raise the lamp.

  • If space allows, try adding an interesting chair or chest, both of which bring texture and color to the hard surfaces of a bathroom. Stack colorful towels on top and finish with a basket filled with pretty objects and toiletries.

  • To dress the back of the toilet, use a long, narrow basket and fill it with silk plants and several attractive hardback books. Nestle the basket on top of the tank.

  • Create a countertop vignette with a lamp, hardback books positioned vertically to hide the lamp cord, and a soft plant tucked into the corner. You don’t even need a container for the plant--just hide the bottom behind the books. Add a bowl of potpourri for a finishing touch. To refresh the scent, roll and crush the potpourri every few days.

  • Adding texture to the ceiling in a small powder room is easy. Use the same color already on the ceiling, only in a glossy finish. Pour a little of the paint onto the paint-can lid. Crumble up a plastic grocery store bag (or use a sea sponge if you have one), and dip it lightly into the paint and dab onto the ceiling, changing directions with each dab so the pattern is random.

  • Place objects off center in the bath, even the mirror.

  • For a high-end look, hang oil paintings over the toilet.
