A preteen’s room can look cluttered and unfocused. Check out the suggestions below for eliminating this common problem.

Create an organized and funky bedroom space that will delight your preteen, who is too old for youth-themed rooms and too young for an adult decorating style. Home expert Ana Teran explains how.

  • Start with three large boxes and label them "Keep," "Gone," and "Not Sure." Let the child decide what goes into which box as you work your way through the room.

  • Make a wall border with compact discs. (You could use all the freebies that come in the mail.) To create a uniform distance between CDs measure with a rope (figure A). Attach with a strong adhesive.

  • Create a platform loft bed with industrial scaffolding. Paint with metal paint. The scaffolding creates a very secure platform. Attach chicken wire to the wall underneath the platform for funky storage for caps, pictures, and containers attached with S-hooks (figure B).

  • Hang a shower curtain (or other fabric panel) along the outside edge of the scaffolding to create privacy in the area under the platform.

  • Place a desk underneath the platform and a beanbag chair. A nice touch is a mailbox for private notes or covered storage.
