Lively colors in different patterns work together for a fun and uplifting design scheme. Pink and green is the ultimate preppy color story. Painted furniture in here is much more important than anything dark, which probably wouldn't go with these lighter colors.

  • Flash back to the days when clothing "C.B.C." (couldn't be cuter). The preppy look is back in fashion and home furnishings. All you need are the right fabrics, the right color scheme and a real sense of fun.

  • Earl suggests making an amazing transformation by painting a dark matching bedroom set a fun color to become a preppy background for the space.

  • Another simple idea to add a preppy touch is to attach rickrack or grosgrain ribbon along the edge of a pillowcase or sheet.

Christina Manca shows how to put these ideas to work when she revamps Rachel Moore's bedroom, taking it from bland to preppy bright. There's nothing wrong with this bedroom, but there's nothing particularly right either. With little color or pattern it lacks pizzazz and the homeowner wants to give her private space some preppy polish.

New bedding, a different furniture arrangement, artwork, accessories and a wall of pink transform this bland bedroom into something truly beautiful. By placing pattern on pattern, it's now a space with personality.

    Makeover items:

pink framed "R" monogram, pink monogrammed lamp (discontinued), ceramic pigs, pink gingham cosmetic bag, silk flower pillows, pink "R" pompom pillow, pink and green laundry bag (Inside and Outside)
bee curtains (Alvine), large pink floral print (IKEA)
plaid comforter (Nautica), pink striped oxford sheet (Bed, Bath and Beyond)
