All About
Materials and Tools:
2 pkgs. Kato Polyclay gold #12391
oval or other cutter
metal smoothing tool
approx. 20" Buna cord
Kato Nublade
acrylic rod
cornstarch and brush
deep-cut rubber stamp
bamboo skewer
pasta machine
glass work surface
400- and 600-grit wet/dry sandpaper
cyanoacrylate glue
Steps:
1. Polymer clay must be conditioned prior to use. Either work chunks by hand or fold and roll through pasta machine until soft and pliable.
2. Roll conditioned gold through medium thick setting of the pasta machine.
3. Cut seven shapes using cutter. Lay the shapes in a straight line on your glass work surface, leaving approximately 1/8 inch between each piece.
4. Fold Buna cord in half. Lay half straight across pieces and press into clay. Lay the other half of the cord on the other side of the pieces and press into the clay. Roll Buna into clay with the acrylic rod so the cord is embedded into the clay.
5. To create a surface pattern: Roll gold clay through the machine on the same thickness as the clay in step one. Fold in half to make a sheet of double thickness.
6. Lightly brush rubber stamp with cornstarch. Lay clay on the rubber stamp and roll with acrylic rod, pressing clay deeply into stamp. Remove clay from stamp.
7. Press clay to work surface lightly so it does not move. Using Nublade Kato, slice off raised stamped areas. It isn’t important to cut in one piece, so shave it off in bits if you like. Once raised areas are removed, roll with acrylic rod to even surface.
8. Cut eight pieces using the same cutter. Press one piece on each of the pieces in step 3. Reserve the eighth piece for use as clasp.
10. To make the clasp: Cut the eighth piece in half and smooth edges. Roll two small balls of gold clay and press to one side of the clasp.
11. Using the blunt end of bamboo skewer, "drill" through the gold balls and into the clay, but do not "drill" completely through clasp.
12. Bake bracelet and clasp at 275 F degrees for an hour.
13. When cool, slide each piece off the Buna cord and sand sides and front. Buff lightly on denim or polar fleece for matte sheen.
