Playful Home
Kitty Bartholomew: You're Home : Episode KIT-1211 -- More Projects »
Designer Tommy Chambers' home was in great need for fixing up when he purchased it. By focusing on a neutral palette with pops of color, he was able to update the 1926 home without losing the historical integrity of the Spanish-style space. Each room is a testament to his unique style of decorating.
The walls in the living room are covered in an art deco-style wallpaper, which serves as a playful, yet neutral backdrop to the various patterned fabrics and pieces of art. The furniture is low to the ground with clean lines and features a sophisticated palette of gold, black, taupe and white with punches of red. The patterns on the pillows and matching ottomans, along with a shaggy white area rug, add texture. The tight upholstery on the ottomans helps camoflauge wear and tear. The non-working fireplace is outfitted with a mirrored insert to reflect the natural light.
The dining room walls are covered with floor-to-ceiling cotton twill draperies, hung with teacup hooks spaced every eight inches. The artwork is affixed to the wall through the fabric. The bejeweled chandelier was the first piece to go up and sets the stage for an elegant dining experience. Red fabric on the double-draped table brings attention to the center of the room.
In the kitchen, Chambers refurbished the white cabinets and updated the doors with metal screen-door handles to coordinate with the old-fashioned stove and chrome accessories. Black-banded jute rugs add a modern look while keeping with the neutral palette. The chairs surrounding the bistro set are covered with more red fabric.
The guest room also serves as an occasional office and sitting room. Burlap covers the walls and dresses the windows, creating a streamlined look within the small space. The burlap adds texture without overpowering the room with pattern. It helps to hide any nail holes as artwork is rearranged on the wall. A block-patterned area rug adds color underfoot.
