Steps:1. Start with the base (the featured project is for a queen-size mattress, which measures 60"x80". Make it any desired height to accommodate storage baskets). To create a support system that will hold the platform and allow open space for the storage baskets, make a modified "I" design out of pine panels (figure A). The center piece is a 72-inch panel that runs down the center of the bed and has two 54-inch panels that run perpendicular to it, which make up the end pieces. To support the center of the bed, two panels are attached to the middle of the center board.
2. To attach all the pieces together, cut four 1x2 cleats to length and nail two to the center of the two end pieces, leaving just enough space for the panel to fit in between them. Place the 72-inch center board between them and secure it with screws through the cleats.
3. For the middle support boards, attach cleats to the middle of the center board as above and slide the side pieces into place. Secure each with screws as above.
4. To finish the frame, attach a 1x2 to all the outside edges using wood glue and finish nails for a simple and sturdy frame.
5. Cut each piece of particle board to 41x62 inches. Lay the pieces next to each other and use four or five mending plates along the seam to secure the pieces together (be sure to drill pilot holes for the screws first).
