Walter Dworkin collects "memories from the 1950s" in the form of Pixieware ceramics. Given the fact that Pixieware is nearly 50 years old and somewhat breakable because of their functional but fragile heads, it's all the more remarkable that he has nearly 300 mint pieces.

It all started in the 1950s when he gave Pixiewares to his parents on their anniversary. Years later his parents gave him back the original pieces, inspiring him to begin his own collection. For the last 14 years, he has avidly pursued pixies and has even written a book on the subject.

Here are some tips for starting your own Pixieware collection:

  • Identify genuine Holt Howard Pixieware by looking for the Holt Howard ink stamp and foil Japanese label on the bottom. Pieces are usually dated with the full name, but smaller pieces may just carry the initials H.H.
  • Mustard, ketchup, jam and jelly jars from 1962 are worth $45 to $85 each.
  • Party pixie hors d'oeuvre dishes from the 1960s are worth anywhere from $200 to $700.
  • Imitation pieces by Davar & Lefton run $40 and up.
