As a craftsperson and seamstress, collecting pincushions comes easy to Elaine Klawans. For more than 20 years she has collected all different types--some of which don't always look like pincushions. From porcelain dolls and handmade beaded ones to lots and lots of animals, her collectibles are displayed throughout her home.

Here are some quick tips on how to start your own pincushion collection:

  • A great find would be a vintage pincushion in the shape of a heart or square like those made by British soldiers during World War I. You can find them at antique stores and flea markets. Expect to pay about $80 to $200.

  • Pincushions made in the mid 1800s that are shaped like a strawberry and marked "Green Leaves, Pennsylvania" can be worth $600 or more.

  • If you find a half doll in Germany from early 1900s with a china head, body and hands, she's worth more than $2,000!
