Figure A
Shari Hiller offers these tips for personalizing bed linens:

  • Sew one or several trims and/or decorative ribbons that pick up the colors and patterns in your bedroom along the edges of a pillowcase (figure A).

Figure B
  • Appliqué a pattern made up of a combination of fabrics and embroidery floss by hand to a pillowcase. Instead of hemming each section, use iron-on interfacing, which helps to keep the edges from fraying--the finished look is a little homespun with the interfacing but it saves a lot of time (figure B). Use a satin, stem or chain stitch plus French knots to give the design more personality.

    Figure C
  • Sew a book pocket that slides under the mattress to hold favorite reading material, glasses and even a remote control. Layer varying sizes of fabric to create the pockets over a rectangular piece cut to the desired width and length. Sew the pieces together with an additional line of stitching through the first two layers for glasses and bookmarks (figure C).
