Angelia Young had a passion for drawing and painting as far back as she could remember, but life took her in a different direction. After years of helping friends decorate their homes, she went back to school for a Masters in interior design. It was there that a required painting class rekindled her love of art and ever since, she has been exploring the medium anew by adding a three-dimensional perspective to her work, as we'll see with her "Paper Art Shadow Box."

Steps:

1. Cover a 12" x 24" canvas panel with brown fiber paper.

2. Glue the paper onto a canvas panel using a glue pen. Wrap the paper around the panel and tape it to the back (figure A).

3. Mix papier-mache pulp with water according to package directions. Apply the mixture to half a model's face to create a mask (figure B). Let the mask set up on model's face for 30 minutes without moving.

4. Peel the mask off the face and let the papier-mache face dry overnight to assure a firm structure (figure C).

5. Create stems for the flowers with fiber paper. Cut white paper into a triangle, then roll the paper around a floral stick (figure D). Glue the point to the roll. Remove the sticks. Make five paper stems of different lengths.

6. To make the flowers, use purple decorative fiber paper and cut three different sized circles.

  • On each circle cut thin strips from the edges toward the center around the circle (figure E), making sure to not cut the circle in half.
  • Fold the circle, cut into thirds, glue to hold and fluff the paper to create a full flower effect (figure F).

7. To assemble the art, place the papier-mache' face diagonally on the paper covered board near the bottom. Use cut toothpicks to hold up the nose and mouth section of the face (figure G). Glue all of this to the board with silicone glue.

8. Place the stems of the flowers through the face at different angles. Glue each one down, bending them to position on the board (figure H).

9. Glue each flower to three of the stems, fluffing the flower pieces to make them stand out (figure I).

10. Cut and glue several single flower petals cut from purple paper to the side of the face, as if they were falling from the flowers. Tie a piece of purple string in a bow around the flower stems (figure J).
