Take a lesson from Matt Fox in the correct way to paint a raised panel door (the areas are numbered in the order they should be painted).
Materials:

2-1/2" sash brush
4" roller
paint tray or bucket with screen
paint

Steps:

Note: The panels are the first areas to be painted and they should be done in this order: panel moldings, panel recesses, and then the panels themselves. Next, paint the frame's central vertical sections, moving from the top of the door to the bottom. The horizontal frame sections come next, followed by the outer vertical sections. Last, paint the latch edge and only paint the hinge edge if it's appropriate.
1. Start with the sash brush on the panel moldings and recesses, making sure not to get any paint up onto the frame. If you do, wipe it off with a damp rag to avoid paint build up on these surfaces. Next, paint the flat panel front with the roller. Follow immediately with the sash brush, laying off the surface vertically to get a professional brush stroke. Continue in this fashion with all the panels on the door.

2. After rolling paint on the central vertical frame pieces, lay them off immediately with the sash brush. Then address any paint that exceeds the top and bottom edges by laying it off in the appropriate horizontal direction. The same goes for the horizontal frame pieces where they meet the outer vertical sections (figure A). This will keep the finished appearance of the door tidy and professional looking.
